Frequently Asked Questions
Think of these less like “light bulbs” and more like the screen on your smartphone, there’s no thin wire to break or burn out.
- Most of these lights are designed to last 5 to 7 years (approximately 50,000 hours) before you even notice them getting slightly dimmer. There are, however, several environmental factors that can shorten their lifespan. These include:
- Power surges caused by fluctuations in current from your supplier and surges caused by lightning strikes in your area.
- High humidity, typical of Charlotte’s changing weather.
- Material Expansion (Freeze-Thaw Cycles). For those in four-season climates, the weather itself can physically break the bulb. Materials like plastic, glass, and metal expand and contract at different rates when they get hot in the sun and freezing at night.
- Built to Last: Unlike the cheap plastic lights from big-box stores, professional LEDs are “sealed.” This means bugs, moisture, and dust can’t get inside to cause a short circuit. You can truly “set it and forget it.”
- We install a “Thermistor” in our bulbs. This is a device that regulates the internal temperature of the bulb. This prevents the buildup of heat in the sealed fixture. Heat destroys bulbs.
Absolutely. Modern LEDs can perfectly mimic the warm glow of a candle or an old-fashioned halogen bulb.
- Adjustable Brightness: We can modify brightness through bulb selection and in some fixtures, by adjusting the brightness within the fixture.
- Warmth Levels: We use “warm white” tones that make brick look rich and plants look lush, not washed out.
It’s simpler than the old mechanical timers that you had to reset every time the power went out.
- Set it Once: Most systems use “Astronomical Timing.” This means the lights automatically know when the sun sets and rises in your specific zip code. They even adjust themselves for Daylight Savings.
- Phone Control: If you want to change something, you can do it from a simple app on your phone—just like checking the weather. No more crawling into the garage to fiddle with a dusty timer box. It works with your existing smart home (Alexa/Google/Apple) and adds a layer of futureproofing.
This is the best part: LEDs use a tiny fraction of the power that old bulbs use.
- The “Coffee” Comparison: Running an entire professional landscape lighting system for a month usually costs about the same as one or two large lattes.
- Efficiency: You can typically light up your whole front yard using less electricity than it takes to run a single traditional 100-watt indoor light bulb.
We install what’s called a “low-voltage backbone.
- Universal Wiring: The heavy-duty wires we put in the ground are the “highway.” Even if light bulb technology gets even better in 10 years, we can just plug new fixtures into the existing wires.
- Invest in the Fixture: By choosing high-quality brass or copper housing, you’re buying a “shell” that will last a lifetime. The internal “light engine” can be easily updated down the road without digging up your yard again.
